Hyper-Formance Decals
Hyper-Formance Decals are correct
water-transfer style, just like Schwinn used. Water-transfer decals are
basically Elmer's Glue on a piece of clear. Installation instructions need to be
followed to the letter for best application results. Some will stray and have
success, but eventually you'll hit a snag. My decals can be clear-coated, but
you must be even more careful. Have your painter call before attempting clear
coating. Decal installation instructions at the bottom of this page.
Ok, now that we've gotten that out of the way....I
make over 50 different decals for Sting-Rays. Below are a few, but there are
many I do not have listed. Email if there's one you need that I do not list.
Please specify exactly the year, color and model of
Sting-Ray that you are ordering decals for. There seem to be a Kazillion
different combinations :-)
Detailed Decal installation and clearcoat instructions are at the
bottom of this page...SEE BELOW

HYPER-FORMANCE
DECAL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Very
important—do not apply these decals like the ones from your
childhood…You were probably doing it wrong then!
- Dip
decal in room temperature water for no more than 2 seconds. (Remember,
two seconds, NOT two minutes.
- Next
place decal on a smooth, clean countertop and do not touch for five (5)
minutes…Allow decal and backing to roll if it wants to roll.
- Apply
decal and backing to clean surface.
Align it to the correct position and then slide the backing out
from under the decal.
- Dip
your finger in water and smooth out all air bubbles under the decal.
Allow decal to dry a minimum of 24 hours at room temperature
before handling. Decal will
dry clear. Do not touch or
move the decal until 24 hours have passed.
- NOTICE:
Nowhere in these
instructions does it say: “Put
water on the surface”…the glue would be “thinned” out too much
with the extra water and will not stick…very bad!
- Do
not use a hair dryer to dry the decals.
- Decals
will not stick to most powdercoats.
Micro-Set decal setting solution will help, but they still may
fail.
- Micro-Set
decal solution makes the decals more water resistant, clearer, and last
longer. It also enables
decals to be clear-coated. Below
are the Micro-Set directions. Micro-Set
is NECESSARY if you want to apply clearcoat over the decals.
OPTIONAL
MICRO-SET DECAL SETTING SOLUTION INSTRUCTIONS:
I
hesitate to type these instructions because everyone’s painting skill
varies and by giving the directions orally, I can sense the caller’s skill
level. If
you have ANY questions, first read both sets of instructions on this page,
then call me at (480) 961-0643 or email me at Pete@Hyper-Formance.com
Micro-Set works EXCELLENT
with or without clearcoat.
- Brush
ONE coat on the surface of the bike.
It will half dry, half not dry; that’s ok.
- Apply
the decal EXACTLY per the decal instructions listed above.
Do NOT apply any water to the painted surface.
- After
you work out all the air bubbles, apply ONE, thin coat (NOT two or
six…just one coat—MORE IS NOT BETTER.
- Watch
the surface for one hour. If
the decal wrinkles at the edge(s), dip your finger in a small amount of
water and smooth the edge down.
- Let
dry at room temperature for 12 hours.
- After
12 hours, if there is a missed air pocket, “poke” slightly with a
sharp X-Acto knife and apply one thin coat of Micro-Set…it will
“suck” the decal down. Let
dry another 6 to 12 additional hours.
- After
12 hours wipe the surface with a CLEAN damp cloth to remove any glue
residue.
If
you are going to clearcoat over the decals:
Apply the first two coats of clear VERY lightly over the decals which
were applied according to the directions listed above. Let EACH coat dry a
minimum of 45 minutes between coats. Just
LIGHTLY MIST clearcoats…a decal is essentially a piece of clearcoat with
Elmer’s glue on it. It is
very easy for clearcoat to work under the edge and then it may lift the
decals. By applying light coats
of clear and allowing them to dry, you are sealing the edge. After the first
to coats, you can lay on additional medium to wet coats of clear as needed.
